“Blowing warm” is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and the causes behind it range from a ten-minute fix to a compressor. Here is how to tell them apart before anyone quotes you.

The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin. This is the classic failed run capacitor — the component that gives the motors the jolt they need to start. It is one of the most common air-conditioning failures and one of the least expensive parts on the system. It is also, unfortunately, a favorite upsell moment, so it is worth knowing that a capacitor is a modest repair and not a reason to replace a working air conditioner.

There is ice on the refrigerant line or the indoor coil. Counter-intuitively, ice means the system is not getting enough warm air across the coil — usually a filthy filter, blocked return vents, or a low refrigerant charge. Turn the cooling off and leave the fan running to thaw it out before anyone visits; running a frozen system is how a cheap airflow problem turns into a failed compressor.

It cools, but never quite gets there. Low refrigerant is the usual explanation, and this is the single most important thing to understand about air-conditioning repair: refrigerant is not consumed. It circulates in a sealed loop. If it is low, there is a leak. Anyone who simply tops it up and leaves without finding that leak has sold you next summer’s repeat visit.

Nothing outside runs at all. Check the dedicated breaker and the outdoor disconnect box near the unit before booking anything. If those are fine, the contactor — the electrical switch that starts the outdoor unit — is a frequent and inexpensive failure, particularly on systems that sat unused all winter.

Water pooling around the indoor unit. That is usually a blocked condensate drain rather than a refrigerant problem. It is a small repair, but worth acting on quickly, because the water has to go somewhere and it is generally into a ceiling or a floor.

Two things make Spokane hard on air conditioners specifically. The system sits idle through a long winter and is then asked for everything during the first real heat stretch, which is when neglected faults surface all at once.
